Abstract writing process

The word abstract comes from the Latin abstractum, which means a condensed form of a longer piece of writing. Therefore, an abstract can be defined as a summary of a large project such as (a thesis, research report, performance, service project, etc.)  that concisely describes the content and scope of the project and identifies the project’s objective, its methodology and its findings, conclusions, or intended results. Abstract writing process as outlined by experts at essaysdoctor.com should summarize the project you have undertaken rather than the more general topic. Thus, it is advisable that when writing an abstract to stop at the end of every sentence. An abstract should contain the following:

•    State the main objective and rationale of your project

•    It should outline the methods you used to accomplish your objectives

•    Should list your project’s results or the products.

•    It should draw conclusions about the implications of your project.

Mastering the abstract writing process is not an easy task to the students. An abstract should brief in that the writer should be straightforward. If your abstract is still too long, look for unnecessary adjectives or other modifiers that do not directly contribute to a reader’s understanding of your project. It should contain about 125 words and failure to that you should cut out all unnecessary information. The following techniques should be followed when writing an abstract:

  • Avoid jargon. Jargon is the specialized, technical vocabulary that is used for communicating within a specific field.  Jargon is not effective for communicating ideas to a broader, less specialized audience such as the Undergraduate Symposium audience.
  • Use past tense when describing what you have already done.
  • Use of short and direct sentences.  Vary your sentence structure to avoid choppiness. This can be avoided by reading your abstract loudly or asking someone else to read it aloud to you, to see if the abstract is appropriately fluid or too choppy.
  • Be concise. One should not use many words where you can communicate the same idea in one. In short, the repetition of information should be avoided.
  • Don’t cite sources, figures or tables, and don’t include long quotations.  This type of material takes up too much space and distracts from the overall scope of your project.
